Click here to complete our online application form. Once submitted, you will be invited to complete an online test. If you pass the test, you will receive an invitation to interview. If you are successful at interview (or second interview, for Lead Tutor applicants), we will invite you to the next Get Further Tutor Training and ask you to provide references and complete an enhanced DBS check.
Once you have completed the Get Further training, you will join our pool of tutors. We will then start looking for a tuition placement for you among our partner colleges.
If you would like more information about applying to become a Get Further tutor, please get in touch.
Hourly paid tutors will be paid £18 for each hour of tutoring. Lead tutors will be salaried, depending on the number of hours contracted and their location.
You will receive 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, pro-rated to the length of your contract. Full details of your holiday entitlement will be included in your contract. You will be expected to take this holiday during the academic holidays, so at Christmas, Easter or half-term.
We review applications on a rolling basis and will close our application form once we have enough tutors to meet demand for the year. To be considered for our September programmes, you must apply before Friday 25th August. To maximise your chances of securing a position, please apply as soon as possible.
Most tutoring sessions take place face to face on college campuses as we find that this is the most effective method of tuition delivery.
We do operate a small number of sessions online at the request of partner colleges.
Tutors should have or be expected to obtain a 2:1 (or above) degree. In addition, we require our tutors to have either an A Level (or equivalent) of grade B (or above) in an English or maths-related subject. For English, we consider subjects such as: English, history, politics or sociology. For maths, we consider subjects such as: maths, physics, chemistry, economics or statistics. In some cases, we will consider tutors for maths if they don’t have a maths-related A level qualification, if they have demonstrated a strong performance at GCSE maths (A or A*). If you are unsure whether you meet the subject requirements, please get in touch.
Tutors are also required to have good English Language skills (note, in some circumstances, we may ask for proof of your English Language skills).
We require all tutors to have an enhanced DBS check conducted no earlier than one year before your start date – if you don’t have one, we can arrange one for you, and ask for two references.
No, you will only be asked to tutor one subject in the Get Further programme (although you can tutor in both subjects if you meet the eligibility criteria and attend the training for each subject).
Once you have completed the Get Further training, you will join our pool of Get Further tutors. We will then start looking for a tuition placement for you among our partner colleges. Our main programme start dates are in September, November and February. Placements continue until the students sit their GCSE exams in November or May. Note, tuition is only delivered during term times, so there are breaks for the Christmas and Easter holidays and half terms.
You can deliver a minimum of 1 hour of tuition per week, but in most cases our tutors deliver more hours than this. Applicants complete a working preferences form following interview where you can share information on the number of hours you are looking for and your availability.
Lead tutors will be contracted to a specific number of hours each week, and we expect that you will spend at least 70% of these hours on tuitio delivery.
Get Further tutors worked on average, 8 hours a week in 2021/22. However, this can range from 1 to 30 hours depending on tutor availability and programme demand locally.
We use the working preferences forms that tutors complete to help us to timetable tuition sessions, alongside student availability at colleges / sixth forms. Once a timetable has been agreed with a college or sixth form, we will notify local tutors with the opportunity. You can then choose to accept or decline the hours offered. Tuition sessions will be delivered within college hours between 9 – 6pm.
The Get Further resources take the form of a tutor workbook, with the questions, recommended methods and answers. To accompany this, students receive a workbook containing the questions only. You will be trained on how to use the resources at our two day tutor training.
To maximise the impact of tuition sessions, resources have been designed and edited by expert maths and English teachers, with thousands of hours of teaching experience and a fantastic track record. They utilise evidence-based English and maths approaches based on insights from research into cognitive science and psychology – to help ensure students really do ‘Get Further’ than they have before in their education.
There is no marking required of tutors after tuition sessions. Tutors are required to complete a register with feedback for each student after each tuition session you deliver.
All students will be studying either English or maths in college or sixth form. The majority will be studying towards a GCSE qualification, with prior attainment of a grade 3 or 2 and aiming for a grade 4.
A number of students may be studying a Functional Skills Level 1 or 2 qualification. We will let you know if the students you will be supporting are studying for a Functional Skills qualification and will support you with a curriculum and resources that have been designed specifically for this qualification.
Our students are a mix of 16- to 18-year-olds and adult learners (aged 19+).
Tutors must complete Get Further training before they start tutoring. During training, tutors will cover how to engage and motivate young people, the principles of effective English or maths pedagogy, how to deliver tuition with impact, and your statutory safeguarding requirements.
We run training periodically throughout the year. Training runs over two days and may be delivered remotely, or in person.
Tutors will be paid for training. Training is expected to run for 10 hours over two days and will be paid at the national living wage.
All tutors need to have an Enhanced, child workforce, DBS certificate issued no earlier than one year before their start date with us, or be signed up to the DBS Update Service.
If you don’t have a up to date certificate, we can arrange an enhanced DBS for you. This will cost £52.20, which we will deduct from your training pay.
