We’re thrilled to share that this summer, we’ll be hosting our first national conference, Get Further Forum: Never Too Late To Learn.
As part if this, we’re seeking applications for breakout sessions and inviting experienced post‑16 English and maths educators to lead them. Our aim is to platform optimistic, evidence‑informed voices from across FE, with real insight from those supporting young people to rebuild confidence, strengthen skills and succeed in their Level 2 qualifications.
If you work with (or have worked with) students resitting English or maths in further education and have an approach, insight or experience that’s made a difference, we’d love to hear from you. You don’t need to be a conference regular or an academic researcher – if you can share what’s helped students and why, your voice belongs at the forum.
What will the sessions look like?
Breakout sessions will run for 45–60 minutes and sit alongside the main conference programme.
Sessions should covey a strong belief in the potential of post-16 students to succeed in English and maths and focus on evidence-informed approaches for supporting this sucess. They might explore research, classroom strategies, leadership approaches, or system‑level insight, always with a clear link to classroom practice and learner impact.
Examples of themes we’re keen to see include:
- Teaching Struggling Readers in English and Mathematics
- Effective Modeling Through Visualisers
- Developing Extended Writing in Struggling Writers
- Adaptive Teaching in Response to SEND and Inclusion Priorities
- Text Selection for GCSE English Resit Learners
- Applying Cognitive Science in Functional Skills Teaching
- Developing Oracy Skills in Further Education
- Boosting Learner Attendance and Classroom Engagement
- Developing Mathematical Oracy in Post‑16 Learners
- Problem Solving in the GCSE Resit Classroom
- Using Algebra Tiles to Develop Conceptual Understanding
This list isn’t final. If your work supports ambitious, evidence‑informed teaching in post‑16 English and maths, we encourage you to apply.
Sessions should be informed by evidence and/or direct classroom experience. This might include:
- Research or theory that underpins your approach
- Evidence of impact from your own teaching or leadership practice
- Practitioner enquiry or evaluation
Clear connections between evidence, experience and impact are what matter most.
Session format
The session format is up to you. Some speakers prefer a presentation‑style session, others include discussion, reflection, or practical activities. We encourage speakers to aim to equip delagrates with actionable takeaways from their sessions, but you are welcome to approach this however best suits your content and delivery style.

You don’t need slides, a script or a fully developed paper, just a clear outline of your idea and why it will be useful to others working in FE English and maths.
Expected time to complete around 15–25 minutes.
